Archery has been practiced by mankind for over 25,000 years (as revealed by carbon dating of early cave drawings). While early usage was mostly for hunting purposes, the development of the bow as a military weapon rapidly followed. At the same time the sport of archery was born.
Today the oldest sporting trophy still being contested (of all sporting codes) is an archery contest, The Musselburg Silver Arrow. The oldest medal on it is dated 1603 and it is still being contested by the Royal Company of Archers. Traditional archers shooting the wooden longbows and recurves of yesteryear, now mix with archers shooting precision aluminum and carbon fibre bows and arrows. Archery continues to be contested in a staggering number of countries and major world sporting events including the World I.F.A.A Field, Bowhunting and 3-D Championships as well as the Olympics. Mt Tiger Archers club, which is affiliated to the New Zealand Field Archery Association, continues this tradition. |
Background
The Clubs beginnings were in 1987 when it was known as Western Hills Bowmen. The name was changed to Mt Tiger Archers in 2001 to reflect the clubs geographical location on Mt Tiger Rd. In 2011 Mt Tiger relocated to Ngunguru Ford Rd, where club members have been actively rebuilding courses and facilities. Whether to rename the club is still under discussion. (May 2012)
The outdoor club is currently being developed, there is plenty of scope at this site, we look forward to it being the equal of the 'old Mt Tiger' and the envy of all clubs in NZ. There is a large river, and an extremely picturesque waterfall - the challenge is to develop a course using these features.
The indoor venue has been developed as an excellent place to learn archery. Coaching sessions are held here on both nights for beginners and Club equipment is available for a nominal hire.
